Welcome to The British Columbia and Yukon Division, Duke of Edinburgh's Award, Young Canadians Challenge

Youth award program encourages Responsibility and Achievement

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Program helps young people between the ages of 14 and 25 to develop self-reliance, perserverence, initiative, self-improvement, and responsibility towards themselves and their community. Designed to complement academic development, the program now operates in over 100 countries. Within BC/Yukon Division 7200 participants are enrolled in the program on their own or through one of 529 registered groups. In 2006 there were 708 Bronze, Silver and Gold level Awards earned, an 8% increase over the previous year and our highest total todate.

The Award has three levels ~ Bronze, Silver, and Gold ~ reflecting the age and development of the participants. At each level there are four sections to complete:
Community Service(a chance to prepare for and provide voluntary service to others and the community)
Expeditions( undertake without motorized assistance a challenging journey of discovery and adventure)
Skills Development( discover and develop personal interests and social and practical skills)
Physical Recreation(improve physical fitness by participating in physical activities)

The program is not a competition and there is a wide choice of activities to choose from in each section. Completion of a level is recognized by the presentation of a Certificate and Pin. Involvement with the Award is excellent for a resume. Participants wishing to do the Award Program must register with their group leader or directly with the Award office. The cost for the program is $20.00 including registration and the participant Record Book,(nothing counts until participants register).
