History

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award was founded in 1956 by HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, K.G., K.T. andKurt Hahn
(http://www.kurthahn.org/) and Lord Hunt ( leader of the first successful ascent of Everest) to help young people develop a sense of responsibility to themselves and to their communities. The Award operates in over 100 countries and has become one of the world’s most prestigious youth programmes internationally known as The International Award for Young People.

Established in Canada in 1963, The Award Programme is open to all young Canadiansbetween the ages of 14 – 25. There are currently more than 30,000 young people participating in the Programme in each of the 10 Provinces and 3 Territories.

1966 First Gold Award Ceremony in Ottawa, His Royal Highness Prince Phillip presents 18 recipients with their Gold Awards
1967 First Commonwealth Gold Expedition in Canada, now known as the International Gold Event or IGE (The Award starts in Manitoba)
1983 The Duke of Edinburgh's Award - Young Canadians Challenge 20th Anniversary. HRH Prince Phillip attends some of the celebrations in Canada
1985 Canada hosts the 2nd International Award Forum in Toronto, Ontario
1988 Canada becomes a founding member of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award International Association and attends 3rd International Award Forum in Australia
1990

The Programme changes name to The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Young Canadians Challenge

1996 Charter for Business established
1997 Canada sends delegates to the 6th International Award Forum in New Zealand
2000 Canada attends the 7th International Award Forum in South Africa
2002 International Gold Event (IGE) held in Canada
2003 The Duke of Edinburgh's Award - Young Canadians Challenge 40th Anniversary (Canada attends the 8th International Award Forum in Barbados)
2005 International Gold Event (IGE) to be held in Hong Kong and China
