Duke Delegate Derek – British Columbia

Q: What level of the Award are you currently working on?
A: I am currently working on the Gold level of the Award.

Q: What activities do you do for each section of your Award?
A: The activities I did for each section for the Silver level of my Award were vehicle driving for skills, swimming and table tennis for physical recreation, volunteering with others to clean up a park for service, and hiking and camping at Golden Ears Provincial Park at Maple Ridge, BC for the adventurous journey.

Q: What was your worst Duke of Ed moment that you now look back on and laugh?
A: My worst Duke of Ed moment that I now look back on and laugh at was when I was completing my adventurous journey at Golden Ears Provincial Park. The park rangers notified all campers of a bear alert in the evening, they set up a trap with food more appetizing in order to lore the bear away from the campsites and advised all campers to store their food away so it won't attract the bear. It was quite serious since the park rangers had to take these type of actions. I was also quite nervous about this because it was something I never faced before. I had trouble sleeping that night and almost didn't sleep at all due to the fear of the bear. I now look back at the way I reacted to this situation and it was quite amusing.

Q: What do you hope to accomplish in your term as a Duke Delegate?
A: In my term as a Duke Delegate, I would like to share to others what I learned and experienced from completing the Award, and encourage more teenagers and young adults to complete the Award.

Q: What do you think of the qualities of a great Leader what comes to mind?
A: I think the qualities of a great Leader are focus, confidence, transparency, integrity, inspiration, and passion. Leadership is the ability to inspire and guide others in order for them to have the opportunity and greatest chance to become successful.

Q: What excites you about being a Duke Delegate?
A: What excites me about becoming a Duke Delegate is the opportunity to communicate with others about the Award, and the chance of listening to the thoughts of others throughout the country, from other Duke Delegates, about their thoughts of the Award.

Q: Can you give us one interesting fact about yourself?
A: An interesting fact about myself is that I am enjoy using CAD software and its functions for creating 2D and 3D CAD models and drawings including SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD. It is also one of my main hobbies since I am given the opportunity to design and create.
