It is an honor to be the President of the Board for the Award in Ontario.  As a Bronze, Silver and Gold Achiever, I have experienced the power of the Award first hand which enabled me to thrive in the Queen's Commerce Program, the corporate environment at TD Bank and in my personal endeavors. The leadership behaviors learned through my Award journey empowered me and my fellow Award Achievers to succeed in life.

I have been involved with the Award for 20 years on the Fundraising Committee, as a Board member and as President for the two years. It has been a very rewarding experience and hopefully I have helped the Ontario Division deliver on the promise of the Award program which is truly hugely beneficial to the youth of Ontario and should be available to anyone that is eligible.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award led me to develop skills, make personal connections and experience the outdoors in ways I would not have imagined when I first enrolled. I have seen first-hand, as a participant and Award Leader, the benefits of this well-rounded program. I serve on the Award's Board to ensure that Canadian youth have the opportunity to engage with, and benefit from, the program as I did.

As a Gold level achiever, I have seen firsthand the benefits of this incredible program. The personal growth opportunity truly is remarkable, providing youth with the skills and tools to be successful in life. I want to assist the Award in ensuring that future generations are given the same opportunity today to be leaders of tomorrow.

I serve on the Award's board because during my time, as a Bronze, Silver, and Gold Achiever, I came to understand how life-changing the Award is. It is an award that shapes youth into the leaders of tomorrow and gives them the confidence to thrive under many different situations. I serve on the board to give back to the Award that has given me so much.  The Award helped me thrive throughout my post-secondary education at the University of Toronto for humanities and York University for teaching. It shaped me into the caring and supportive mentor and teacher that I am to my students today. I want to see the Award be accessible and as life-changing for every youth across the province and country, so all youth can gain the leadership skills, empowerment, and personal growth from an Award journey to help them succeed in anything and everything they want to do.

I was first introduced to the Award in 2010, when a family member invited me to participate in Ski for the Duke. Hearing first-hand from Award achievers, whose lives had been transformed by the positive influence of Award, inspired me to get involved.

The Award is one of the few programs that is available and accessible across geographies, capability levels, socio-economic-status and more.  It helps those who need to start great habits build them, and it can help even the highest performers accelerate further.  The Award empowers young people of all stripes build themselves into better citizens and more active participants in our society.  In an increasingly challenging world, we need many more young people who can lean in, move forward, and push ahead - and they need to come from all walks of life.  The Award is a proven and efficient framework to enable people to take ownership and responsibility as their best selves.

I also volunteer because of the the brand perception of the Award itself: the programme does much more good for many more people than many immediately realize based on a cursory glance - but the flexibility of the program makes it much more complex to explain.  Consider the paragraph above: for many charities, a single sentence can do justice to the idea behind the work.  The Award can be so many things to so many people, but the story is likewise more complicated.  Perhaps most of all, I serve on the Board to help the organization try to tell a story that is hard to hear.

I strongly believe the Award allows young people to determine what they are passionate about, regardless of their background, culture or access to resources. This, to me, is critical in today's day and age. By creating opportunities for young people to develop skills, get physically active, give service and experience adventure, the Award can play a critical role in their development and I am happy to help support this amazing framework!

My background in Olympic sailing instilled a passion for educational and personal development opportunities presented outside of a formal classroom environment. As a recent transplant from the Maritimes, I was looking to get involved in my new community of Toronto. I learned more about the Award while helping with fundraising efforts in 2018, and felt a strong alignment with the organization's values. I was honored to accept a Board position.
