With the cancellation of Vancouver Public Library’s free coding programs due to COVID-19, four grade 10 students saw a need and their chance to make a difference. Duke of Ed participants Austin, Armaan, and David, along with their friend Kevin, created their own non-profit to teach coding to young people.

Their program, called Coding Pals, was an instant hit with youth: “We are currently looking for more volunteers to help us out as we are overwhelmed with registrants,” Austin tells us. To keep teaching while maintaining social distancing, the friends hold classes online using Zoom. The program is volunteer-run and there is no cost for students to register.
Where will they go from here? “I want to help expand Coding Pals to new horizons by establishing local community programs and holding more online classes.”

The Duke of Ed is an amazing way for me to engage in my community... Through the Award, I got involved in the climate movement. I now work with organizations such as Dogwood, UBC Climate Hub, and the David Suzuki Foundation.

The Award got me thinking more about volunteering, and how I could do good in my community... Without this little initial push, I would probably never have started volunteering at the food bank. I think it makes a substantial difference in people’s lives.

Since joining Duke of Ed, I realized that service is actually a lot of fun and rewarding.

The Duke of Ed was great for me as it got me to set aside time to help my community with volunteer work. I chose to help set up plays and concerts at my school. It was really a whole other world for me, which I never knew about beforehand.
