Neetin's Story

Gold Award Achiever

Gold Award Achiever Achieving the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award has definitely been the longest running goal that I ever set out to do. It all started in Grade 9 when my school class was introduced to the Bronze award, we set out on hiking trips, and were heavily encouraged to volunteer and be physically active, and year later I received my award from the mayor of Rothesay, New Brunswick. After tasting success I knew it couldn’t stop there so I set out for the Gold.

The Gold was not a simple task and has pushed so far out of my comfort zone that I couldn’t retrace my steps back with a map. The physical, service, and skill hours were not over challenging to get as I was already heavily involved in sports, volunteering and drama at my school, but what I found daunting was the excursion into wild. I decided to sign up for a 5 day dog sledding trip, something which I never thought I would ever have the chance to do. I made memories which will last a lifetime and wouldn’t give them up for anything.

My next challenge was the residential project. I learned of a conference which invited students from around the world and put them through countless workshops and camping activities. Of course I would have chosen to do anything else because I was scared of staying with complete strangers in a tent for an entire week, but I pushed on, and I don’t regret it. I met people on that trip from Peru, France, and India who I remained friends with long after the tent was taken down and we all flew home.

The Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award has challenged me to look within myself and move past the boundaries which were previously placed around my life. I went places, and met people that I never imagined before. This award was more than an award, but rather an invitation to a more accessible world than I was previously used to, and I encourage anyone remotely interested to participate in such a life changing experience.
