Silver Award Achiever

I wouldn’t have expected that The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award would have such a positive impact on my life. I realized the potential that I have and gained valuable skills that I was not aware of. I was first introduced to the Duke of Ed through my school and a couple of my relatives. I was so eager to start as soon as possible and get right to it. This program taught me to manage my time effectively, be self-motivated and enjoy every moment for what it is worth because moments like these don’t come back.

My most memorable experience while completing the award was the Adventurous Journey. When I was looking through options for my Adventurous Journey, I saw Chocpaw Expeditions on the Duke of Ed website and I was instantly intrigued, as this would be a chance for me to try something new. I knew this would be perfect for me because I love dogs and meeting new people. On my adventurous journey, I went to South River, Ontario. I experienced many new and exciting things that I would not have done if it weren’t for this trip. I experienced what it was like being in -30°C weather and being surrounded by 30 loving and enthusiastic dogs. On the first day, I met several excited and nervous students just like myself. Throughout the expedition, I learned to be more outgoing and courageous. Each trail we went on had a breath taking view of an incredible winter wonderland. My total expedition of the journey concluded to be about 127 km of dog sledding. A goal that I set for myself before my expedition was to develop my teamwork and leadership skills. I accomplished this by working hard with a personal team of 6 dogs that was assigned to myself and leading them through the forest to reach the different campsites each day.

I have become a risk taker, which I incorporate into my day to day life. This has been a life changing experience for me as I enjoy taking new challenges. When I look back at my trip, the moments I remember the best were the ones that pushed me to go out of my comfort zone.

The Award has motivated me to be the best version of myself. It has helped me become more active in my community and well rounded. I am more confident and outgoing, which has helped me gain valuable networks. I have learnt the ability to set and achieve goals for myself and be more responsible. While achieving the Silver Award, I was able to develop my personality, be more independent and persevere through obstacles in my path. I am very grateful for the opportunity to complete The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award because it enabled me to go beyond my own boundaries so that I can have experiences that I couldn’t have done on my own.
