Becoming a Cycling Enthusiast, Jerry’s Award Story

Meet Jerry, a Bronze Award Holder who has discovered a passion for cycling and has cycled over 1,000km! Jerry wants to share his story to inspire others to try new activities when participating in the Award.

Getting Started

Jerry felt exhausted by the consistency of isolated virtual learning. The monotony of virtual learning had been incredibly draining and shattered Jerry’s excitement to learn.

About a year into the pandemic, Jerry’s Air Cadet Squadron had a presentation about the Award. Jerry had a basic understanding of the Award but hadn’t considered participating. Jerry thought it was a fantastic opportunity to find new things to enjoyed, new ways to serve the community and provide him with a sense of purpose during this time of isolation.

Discovering Cycling

Jerry never had an interest in fitness. Jerry was always the unathletic kid in school and didn’t participate in formal recreation sports. When it came to choosing a Physical Recreation activity he was stumped. Jerry decided to take a shot in the dark and try cycling. Looking back Jerry believes this decision was one of the best he’s ever made. There’s an unparalleled sense of freedom, exploration, and adventure when Jerry is on the bike.

Jerry looked forward to cycling every day after class, going to new places and learning new things. Biking is what kept him going that year; he would cycle to clear his head and get away from the house. Ever since starting the Award, Jerry has accomplished things he’d never been able to imagine before.

“I’ve biked over 1,000km throughout the program, gone on day-long biking trips with friends, and seen the world from a completely different angle. I’ve been places where I’d never have gone by car or on foot.”

The Award program is an incredible opportunity because it provides both the nudge and the support you need to build your skills, fitness, and contributions to your community.

Jerry wants other participants to know that the Award will constantly push you out of your comfort zone and explore new things. Jerry is incredibly thankful for this experience because he has been able to discover his passion for cycling.

We are excited to hear about the other passions Jerry discovers as he continues with The Award.

Thank you Jerry for sharing your story, we hope it inspires you to Join the Award, Volunteer with the Award, or Become an Award Centre.
