New Opportunities, Amber’s Award Experience

The Award and High School

When Amber tells people about her Award experience, they are often impressed by the level of dedication necessary. But she is most thankful for the new talents she has acquired. Amber’s ability to manage her time and plan ahead of time was one of her most valued assets. Balancing Amber’s hectic schedule was a challenge throughout High School while working towards the Award, but she was able to prepare for the world and her university life by establishing time management skills.

“We have to try and see what happens, if I don’t like it I tried it at the very least” – Amber

Award Activities

Cadets was an important part of Amber’s Award; her skill was air rifle shooting, and her service was teaching youth in Cadets. Due to a shortage of time and accessibility, physical recreation was a difficult part of the Award. Amber appreciates the independence the Award offers; her physical recreation activities included walking the dog, skating, and summer activities at the cottage.

Adventurous Journey Experience

The Adventurous Journey is commonly a highlight for participants since it is so unique to the Award. Amber took part in a canoeing expedition in tilde water. One memory she shared was the group didn’t notice all the canoes had floated away until there was only one remaining. The next canoeing expedition was on a river that had largely dried up, so they spent more time on land than in the water. Everyone was new to canoeing, and while there were challenges, so many more memories were formed.

“It was a hot mess of a weekend, but I would totally go out and do it again tomorrow – Amber

Amber encourages young people to partake in the Award because it can be easily incorporated into weekly initiatives. The Award has enabled Amber to achieve ambitions she had never idea she possessed, such as becoming one of Canada’s best Army Cadets.

We are excited to see where Amber goes with the Award and her continued accomplishments.

Thank you to Amber for sharing your story, we hope it inspires you to Join The Award, Volunteer with The Award, or Become an Award Centre.
