Highlights: Atlantic Canada Education Forum

Atlantic Canada Education Forum

The Atlantic Canada Education Forum, held on June 26th in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, brought together senior education leaders, educators, and partners from across the region for a day of meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and vision-setting. Hosted by Award Canada, the forum was centered on the theme: “Together in Learning: Empowering Learners and Educators through the Award.”

This gathering marked a key moment in the Award’s growth in Canada, underscoring its impact and the partnerships that make it possible. At the heart of the forum was the Co-curricular Approach, a model that integrates the Award into public education systems to support student development, equity, and life readiness.

Key Outcomes and Highlights

Shared Commitment to Expansion

Education leaders from the Atlantic provinces expressed strong alignment with the Award’s vision and a shared interest in expanding access across Grades 9–12. Several new conversations were initiated around scaling the Award through full-grade and full-school implementations.

Recognition of Education Operating Partners (EOPs)

A standout moment of the day was the recognition of province-wide leadership in advancing the Award across Atlantic Canada. A certificate was presented to the newly signed Education Operating Partner, NLSchools, Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. These province-wide partnerships mark a significant step toward building sustainable, scalable access to the Award for students across the region.

Momentum for System-Level Integration

The forum discussed practical strategies for aligning the Award with provincial education goals, including well-being, engagement, and post-secondary readiness. Participants shared examples of how the Award complements existing frameworks and supports holistic student development.

A Global Endorsement

The presence of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, in his role as Chairman of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, added global significance to the event. The Duke’s attendance affirmed the importance of this work and the growing momentum behind the Award’s integration into public education.

Looking Ahead

The forum concluded with a strong sense of shared purpose and forward momentum. As we move into the next phase of our Co-curricular Approach, Award Canada will continue working closely with provincial partners, school boards, and educators to:

  • Expand access to the Award across Atlantic Canada
  • Support the professional learning and leadership of educators
  • Build the infrastructure needed to sustain and scale the Award
  • Ensure that every young person, regardless of background or geography has the opportunity to benefit from experiential learning

This forum was more than a conversation – it was a catalyst. Together, we are building a future where experiential education is not an add-on, but an essential part of every student’s journey.
