Christ the King Catholic Secondary School recently welcomed Ontario’s Minister of Education, Paul Calandra, MPP Joseph Racinsky, and HCDSB Director of Education John Klein for a special event showcasing how experiential learning is transforming education through the Award in Canada.
This visit marked an exciting milestone: the launch of an Education Operating Partnership (EOP) with the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB). Through this partnership, students are beginning their Bronze Award, earning a Portfolio Development micro-credential, and building skills that connect to programs like Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM), Advanced Placement (AP), and leadership initiatives such as DECA and HOSA.

The celebration brought together students, educators, and community leaders, including Award Canada CEO Mark Little and Education Consultant Laura Briscoe, to recognize the commitment to inclusive, goal-driven learning. The energy in the room reflected the Award’s impact helping young people set personal goals, build confidence, and explore future pathways.
A highlight of the day was the creative contribution of Grade 10 student Anna Fursa, whose photography captured the spirit of the event. Anna’s work exemplifies how the Award encourages students to pursue passions and develop real-world skills.

We extend our thanks to Principal Lisa Vasile, Meghan van Asseldonk, Jordyn Tower, Em Del Sordo, and the HCDSB leadership team for championing this initiative. Their vision ensures students across the board have access to meaningful opportunities for growth.
Halton Catholic first explored the Award during the Ontario Education Leadership Gathering this summer, and now, with Christ the King Catholic SS and Bishop P. F. Reding Catholic SS on board, the journey is officially underway. We look forward to celebrating the achievements of students and educators as this partnership grows.
