Darlene Savage: Creating Impact Through a Life of Service

Service has long been at the heart of Her Honour Darlene Susan Savage’s life. As the spouse of the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, she is known for her deep commitment to community and volunteerism. Raised in Atlantic Canada, she built a career in the retail pharmaceutical sector before dedicating her time to causes close to her heart, including leadership with the Junior League of Halifax and active involvement at St. Luke’s Anglican Church. In 2024, she received the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of her contributions, and she continues to be an engaged and visible presence in communities across the province.

“Get involved in something that’s more than just yourself. Join your community, help others, and take on challenges that push you. You’ll build confidence, learn new skills, and have experiences that will stick with you for the rest of your life.”

Building Confidence, Camaraderie, and a Commitment to Give Back

Long before she pursued a career in management and community service, Darlene Savage was a determined participant in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Canada. Having completed all three levels, Bronze, Silver, and Gold, she reflects on the experience as a defining chapter in her life.

Of the three levels, the Gold Award stands out most clearly in her memory. The Gold expedition pushed her physically and mentally in ways she had never experienced.

“There was a lot of walking,” she recalls, laughing at the memory. But it was far more than just a stroll in the woods. The trails were uneven, muddy, and often swampy, demanding every ounce of her energy and willpower. Within the first hour, the brand-new hiking boots she had optimistically purchased betrayed her, leaving deep blisters on her heels. Undeterred, she changed into sneakers and kept going. Every step tested her endurance, every incline challenged her determination, and every obstacle required her to dig deep. The expedition was exhausting, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately exhilarating and unforgettable. It was a powerful lesson in persistence, adaptability, and resilience.

Her Award experience was shaped during her years in Girl Guides, where much of her development was supported and assessed. It was during that time that she found a space that fostered friendship, teamwork, and a growing sense of purpose. For someone who was not drawn to competitive sports, it offered a structured and adventurous outlet that felt meaningful.

“I needed to be part of something,” she says. “And that was a lot of fun.”

Service and giving back were also central to her experience. She canvassed for the Canadian Cancer Society and volunteered in the nursery at her church during Sunday services. Those early acts of contribution laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to helping others.

“Well, it gave me a sense of always wanting to give back,” she reflects. “I’ve done a fair bit of volunteering during my life and I always wanted to give back in that way.”

Beyond service, the Award instilled confidence and leadership skills that shaped her future. The process of setting goals, navigating challenges, and accomplishing demanding tasks gave her the courage to pursue university, embrace leadership roles at a young age, and step forward when new opportunities arose.

When asked what advice she would offer to young Award participants today, her message is clear and heartfelt:

“Get involved in something that’s more than just yourself. Join your community, help others, and take on challenges that push you. You’ll build confidence, learn new skills, and have experiences that will stick with you for the rest of your life.”

Darlene Savage’s journey shows that the Award is more than a program. It is an opportunity to push your limits, discover your strengths, and make a real difference in your community. Every trail walked, every challenge faced, and every act of service is a step toward becoming the person you aspire to be.
