This past weekend, as the world marked World Teachers’ Day, we take a moment to honour the educators who guide, mentor, and empower young people every single day.
Since its beginning in 1994, World Teachers’ Day has been a global moment to recognize the vital contributions of teachers everywhere. The date, October 5, was chosen to commemorate the 1966 UNESCO and International Labour Organization Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. This agreement called for recognition of the importance of competent and motivated educators in every society.
At The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Canada, we see every day how educators help turn potential into purpose. Teachers introduce the Award to young people, guide them as they set and achieve their goals, encourage them as they build new skills, and support them as they serve their communities and embrace personal challenges.
Because of their commitment:
- Young people build confidence, resilience, curiosity, and independence.
- The Award’s impact continues to grow stronger in schools.
- Teachers shape not only learners, but also future changemakers.
To every educator who goes beyond the classroom to believe in the possibilities of young people, thank you. Your dedication helps open doors, ignite passion, and strengthen our communities.
From all of us at The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Canada, we thank you and celebrate you on World Teachers’ Day and every day!
