Guiding through the Award

Pathfinders – Canada Cord

Explore how your Pathfinder activities for the Canada Cord can also count toward the Bronze Award! By aligning your efforts, you can work towards two significant achievements at the same time – building skills, volunteering in your community, and participating in outdoor adventures. This is a great way to challenge yourself, grow as a leader, and have fun along the way!

Note: The Bronze Award aligns perfectly with the Canada Cord, allowing Pathfinders to work towards both without adding extra commitments.

How the Award will get you there:

Example – Skills (Into the Outdoors Program Area)

SMART Goal: Over the next 6 months, I will dedicate 1 hour per week to the Into the Outdoors program area, focusing on improving my navigation and camping skills. By the end of the 6-month period, I will have completed a program theme and will have demonstrated my skills by planning and leading a local hiking trip for my unit.

Example Assessor: A Pathfinder Unit Guider or Outdoor Skills Instructor.

ORB Category: Skills

ORB Subcategory: Outdoor Adventure Skills

Example Log for ORB: This week, I practiced setting up a tent and learned about different fire-starting techniques during our Into the Outdoors session. I was able to safely build and extinguish a fire, which boosted my confidence in outdoor skills. I’m looking forward to leading an overnight camp later this year.

Example – Voluntary Service (Junior Leader Position or Community Service Award)

SMART Goal: Over the next 4 months, I will volunteer 1 hour per week as a Junior Leader for an Embers unit. I will assist with planning and leading activities, supporting badge work, and helping at community events. My goal is to complete at least 16 hours of volunteering, contributing towards the Community Service Award.

Example Assessor: A Girl Guide Leader or Pathfinder Unit Guider.

ORB Category: Voluntary Service

ORB Subcategory: Leadership/Youth Mentoring

Example Log for ORB: This week, I helped lead a crafting session for my Embers unit, assisting the girls with their badge requirements. I also organized games to help them develop teamwork skills. I’m enjoying the experience of mentoring younger Guides and seeing their excitement during meetings.

SMART Goal: I will commit to participating in weekly physical activities such as swimming, cycling, or hiking, for at least 30 minutes twice a week over the next 3 months. By the end of the term, I will aim to complete a 5km hike as part of the Into the Outdoors program area.

Example Assessor: A PE teacher, sports coach, or Girl Guide Leader.

ORB Category: Physical Recreation

ORB Subcategory: Outdoor Activities

Example Log for ORB: This week, I did a 45-minute hike with my Pathfinder unit as part of the Into the Outdoors program area. We worked on hiking uphill and keeping a steady pace. I felt like I had more energy this time and didn’t get as tired as I used to on longer hikes. After the hike, we stretched, and my Guider gave us tips on how to build endurance. I’m excited for next week because we’ll be practicing how to use a map and compass during our hike.

(Completed as a team. Participants will collaboratively establish practice and qualifying journey goals together).

SMART Goal: I will plan and take part in a two-day, one-night Into the Outdoors expedition with my Pathfinder unit. As part of the planning, I will help map the route, organize supplies, and prepare meals for the group. During the expedition, I will assist with navigation and lead the camp setup.

Example Assessor: A Girl Guide Leader or Outdoor Skills Instructor.
