Discover your city’s food culture by exploring markets, restaurants, and neighborhoods known for their culinary traditions. Learn about where food comes from, meet local producers, and experience how different cultures express themselves through cooking and eating.

(Completed as a team. Participants will work together to plan and complete their journey.)

Example Activity: Culinary exploration visiting markets, food vendors, and culturally diverse neighborhoods to learn about food traditions.

Example Team Goal: We’ll explore at least 4 food markets or cultural food districts, sample dishes from 3+ different cuisines, interview vendors about their culinary traditions, and compile a guide to affordable international food spots in our city.

Example Assessor/Supervisor: Teacher, Award Leader, or culinary program coordinator

Example SMART Goal: I’m combining cycling with my food exploration goals! For 13 weeks, I’ll bike to farmers’ markets and food spots, building up to longer rides. It’s fitness AND meal planning!

Example Assessor: Gym teacher, cycling instructor, or recreation center staff

Example Log: Biked 8 km to the Saturday market and back. Carried groceries in my backpack – extra workout! My legs feel stronger each week. Planning a longer route to the waterfront market next Saturday.

Example SMART Goal: I’m learning to cook dishes from around the world! Each week for 13 weeks, I’ll try a new recipe from a different culture, building my cooking skills and cultural knowledge.

Example Assessor: Home economics teacher, culinary instructor, or community cooking class leader

Example Log: Made Thai green curry from scratch today, including the curry paste! Learning how different spices work together. The balance of flavors is tricky but I’m getting it. Japanese ramen is next week’s challenge.

Example SMART Goal: Nobody should go hungry! I’m volunteering at the food bank for an hour each week over 13 weeks, helping sort donations, pack hampers, and assist with distribution.

Example Assessor: Food bank coordinator or volunteer supervisor

Example Log: Packed 20 hampers today and helped with the distribution line. Met a family who comes regularly. The mom thanked us for making a hard time easier. Understanding the real impact of this work. Helping with the truck unload next week.
