Expanding her horizons

“The Award has allowed me to explore areas of knowledge that I would not have experienced without its encouragement. I discovered a family and a passion within Tall Ships Canada and this has allowed for my skills in leadership to really shine and to teach youth about the world around them.

The Award has allowed me to reflect on the activities I do every day within my life. I started the Award because I was already participating in all the required categories, but now I realize how much commitment I have put into these events. It has boosted my self-confidence and has allowed me to understand the impact I have on my community and peers.

Giving Back to the Community

My Award experience has allowed me to volunteer in many different spaces such as my school, on a tall ship and at our local rowing club. At school I had the privilege to help guide grade 7/8 girls on their volleyball journey and in building fundamentals for high school level volleyball.

I have used my passion in community volunteering to bring positivity and enthusiasm to my peers and to share my skills with others. This has increased my ability to lead and be a good role model for others in activities such as being a Link leader in my school to guide the new grade 9’s through their first high school experience. My passion for music has developed my skills in public speaking and presenting as well as interacting with new groups of people. It has allowed me to perform in front of crowds as big as 500 people, and I have loved every experience that I have been offered because of the Award.

Gold Project

I am most proud of my Gold Experience. I was able to, thanks to Girl Guides of Canada, travel to The Yukon to explore the outdoors and learn more about the history of the territory. I participated in every hike and even swam in the arctic, which was a bucket list item of mine. I am most proud of this because I have now travelled to all the provinces and territories in Canada and along the way, pushed myself to become more independent, meet people from all over Canada and appreciate the outdoors. It was a big step in my Duke of Ed journey and I am so grateful for the experience.

I would recommend the Award because everyone can participate. Despite discrimination or exclusion experienced in other areas of your life, the award is open and accessible to anyone willing to put in commitment and perseverance. It also allows you to push yourself and discover the things that you enjoy doing in life and to find the people you enjoy doing these things with.
