Journey to Bronze, Isaac’s Award Story

Meet Isaac a Bronze Award Achiever from Ontario who has used his Award experience to become involved in his school and develop a passion for tennis and coaching.

“I started working towards my bronze Award after being advised by my Grade 9 art teacher. The Award was a great experience that inspired me to explore and create new experiences, and it’s something I would recommend to other students.

Skill – Event Planning

I decided to choose Event Planning And Organizing for the skills section, which allowed me to organize a variety of events. My first event was a school-wide initiative to generate funds for dental treatments for Indigenous communities. I remember being astounded by the alarming statistics I learned about the lack of dental care in Indigenous communities, and I felt it was important to give back. Shortly following this event, I joined Project 5K, an organization dedicated to providing high school students with meaningful volunteer experiences in their communities. Through this organization, I made new connections, gained new experiences, and assisted in a variety of activities. My key role was marketing which allowed me to specialize in one area and apply my digital editing skills.

Physical – Tennis

I selected Tennis as my physical recreation activity as I often played with my family. However, the Award made Tennis more meaningful as it pushed me to create precise SMART Goals and focus on what I wanted to achieve. Each day, I would concentrate on a different shot or strategy, and the Award served as a great motivator to improve my game. I am thankful for the goal setting tools the Award provides to keep me on track to achieving my goals.

Service – Teaching

I chose Teaching & Coaching for my service section, and I’m so glad I did. In this section, I earned my hours through tutoring, which helped me improve my teaching abilities and gain experience working with the public. While volunteering as a tech coach at my local library, I mostly gained my hours. Many of the patrons that sought my help did not have experience using various types of technology and were eager to learn. I found being able to assist them to be an enriching experience.

Unconventional Adventurous Journey

The final part of my Award was the adventurous journey which was an online camping experience due to COVID-19 restrictions. Although I was skeptical at first, I found the experience highly fulfilling and exciting. Virtual camping included both online and offline experiences, and it included researching many aspects of camping, including survival skills. In addition, it included solitary hiking and cooking. I was also connected to a vibrant group of peers, which helped me foster friendships.

Join the Award

The Award was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I strongly recommend to any high school student. It enabled me to develop new friendships, talents, and activities, among many other things. It provided me with opportunities to give back to my community while also providing me with enjoyable and meaningful experiences. Without a doubt, the Award is an experience worth undertaking.”
